Storage Bench Glossary

Storage benches are great go-to organization solutions: They keep items safely out of sight, and they double as useful seating. The great news is they can fit into - or become fantastic focal points - of your home's decor, both inside and out.

Navigating the array of storage benches on the market starts with understanding the options available. Once you've got the know-how, you can select a storage bench with the functionality you need and the design possibilities your home deserves. Let's take a look at storage bench basics.

Indoor Storage Benches
Indoor storage benches, traditionally, resemble park benches: They have a basic bench frame with arms and a solid or slatted back. The seat, which can be cushioned or not, lifts to reveal a space in which items of all kinds can be stored. Modern entryway storage benches can be highly decorative, as well, with intricate carvings, detailed construction and fancy backrests that can compliment virtually any decor. Multi-tasking indoor storage benches can also feature mirrors and hat and coat hooks, making them perfect for entryways.

Backless Storage Benches
Backless storage benches are just what their name indicates: a storage unit without a backrest. These trunk-like benches are ideal in busy rooms; try one at the foot of a bed or in a laundry area. The seats can boast plenty of comfy bench cushions, so they're ideal for dressing areas, too.

Toy Boxes
Toy boxes have been fixtures of kids' rooms for years, and they're still relevant today. Toy boxes can be as simple as a box, but they can also function as ready-made kid seating when closed - just pile pillows and a few dear plush toys on top. Toy boxes are perfect for odd-sized toys, such as balls and trucks, that won't fit neatly on shelves.

Outdoor Storage Benches and Boxes
Storage outside is key to a neat yard, but it doesn't have to be boring. Outdoor storage benches are similar in design as indoor benches, but they come in weather-ready materials such as cedar, aspen, and wicker. They, too, can be outfitted with outdoor bench cushions for additional seating when closed. Outdoor storage boxes have a simpler box construction, and many are outfitted with wheels to allow you to easily transport heavy materials.
